  2.                   Micromarc Inkjet Printer

  5. Texas Instruments (a name I haven't  heard for a while) have
  6. now come  up  with  a  pretty  decent  inkjet  printer.  Its
  7. supposed to compete against the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 520,
  8. but I doubt very much if it'll snatch much of HP's market.

  10. The Micromarc  is  a  300dpi  inkjet  printer  with  Deskjet
  11. emulation. And because it  uses  128  nozzles instead of the
  12. usual 50, it is very  quick  at  300cps.  This makes it much
  13. faster than the Deskjet  in  both  draft  and letter quality
  14. modes. Strangely though, the draft  and letter quality modes
  15. have exactly the same  resolution,  although  the draft mode
  16. uses up less ink.  Perhaps  this  should  be called the "ink
  17. saver mode" instead!

  19. Although the measurements seem  quite  average for an inkjet
  20. printer, the  Micromarc  gives  the  impression  of  being a
  21. rather bulky printer. This is  probably  because of its old-
  22. fashioned design;  it  definitely  isn't  the  most  stylish
  23. printer I've encountered!  In  fact,  the Micromarc actually
  24. looks like  a  dot  matrix,  especially  a  STAR  dot matrix
  25. printer. Paper is put  into  the  printer  from  the top and
  26. comes out from the same place,  which is rather strange. The
  27. power switch is situated at  the  front (a good idea, guys!)
  28. and so is the control panel.

  30. Changing the cartridge  (which  lasts  for  1,100  pages) is
  31. pretty simple; just take out  the  old  one and snap the new
  32. one into place, but  quality  is  definitely  not as good as
  33. that of the Deskjet. There is  a lot of banding on printout,
  34. and when  we  compared  it  with  the  Deskjet,  the Deskjet
  35. definitely wins.

  37. The control panel allows  you  to  select fonts (which takes
  38. some  getting  used  to)  from   three  (Dutch,  Gothic  and
  39. Courier), change the paper size  and  alter from portrait to
  40. landscape and vice versa. There are twelve green lights that
  41. go with the printer to allegedly  help you know what's going
  42. on. But maybe we could have had  a red light for ON-LINE and
  43. an amber one for  POWER  to  distinguish between the others!
  44. Just a thought, though.

  46. To be honest, if I had to choose between buying this and the
  47. HP Deskjet 520 (which is the same price), I would go for the
  48. Deskjet. Even though it  may  be  slower, it definitely wins
  49. where quality and ease-of-use are concerned. Maybe we'll see
  50. a Micromarc II with better results.
